- For years, Derek stood up against state regulators who blocked new investment in Southwest Kansas and created legal and regulatory uncertainty by substituting their judgment for the decisions of Kansans' elected policy makers.
Opposing frivolous lawsuits
- More than 500 of Derek's friends and neighbors in Independence have good jobs building airplanes during this recession because legal reforms more than a decade ago paved the way for Cessna to build a new plant in Independence. Derek understands firsthand that opposing wasteful lawsuits promotes jobs and investment for Kansans.
- Derek led the fight against frivolous lawsuits in Kansas by protecting Kansas agri-tourism operators, farmers and ranchers, and other food producers from nuisance lawsuits.
Protecting taxpayers
- Derek helped protect taxpayers by writing the law that created an independent office of inspector general to seek out waste, fraud and abuse in the massive Medicaid program and by writing the law giving the attorney general more power to recover mistaken Medicaid payments.
