TOPEKA -- (January 12, 2011) -- Attorney General Derek Schmidt today sent a letter to Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi requesting that Kansas be allowed to join the multi-state lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the Obama/Pelosi health care law.

Schmidt, who was sworn in Monday as attorney general, said joining this lawsuit will be one of his first official acts as attorney general.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas Attorney General-elect Derek Schmidt said Tuesday his office would increase scrutiny of any environmental regulations the federal government proposes that might exceed federal authority.

Schmidt, a Republican who takes office in January, told The Associated Press that his administration would take a close look at any rules from the Environmental Protection Agency that might be harmful to Kansas.

Attorney General-elect Derek Schmidt promised Tuesday that within days of taking office, he'll bring Kansas into a legal challenge of the federal health care law approved earlier this year.

Schmidt said during an interview with The Associated Press that he's already consulting with other attorneys general about existing lawsuits in federal courts. A Republican, he takes office Jan. 10.

Schmidt announces resignation from Senate

INDEPENDENCE -- (November 15, 2010) -- Senate Majority Leader Derek Schmidt on Friday announced his resignation from the Kansas Senate.

Schmidt, who was elected Kansas attorney general earlier this month, on Friday sent a letter notifying Secretary of State Chris Biggs of his resignation from the Senate effective on January 10, 2011. That is the date Schmidt will be sworn in as attorney general.

TOPEKA -- (November 12, 2010) -- A former senior deputy attorney general will lead the transition team for Attorney General-elect Derek Schmidt.

Schmidt announced today that John Campbell, of Topeka, will serve as transition director as Schmidt prepares to assume the office of attorney general. Schmidt was elected attorney general November 2 and will take office January 10, 2011.
